The paper presents a brief review of studies related to the energy balance in the solar atmosphere above the chromosphere. Processes discussed include heating of the outer corona by the dissipation of mechanical waves generated in the lower atmosphere, convective outflow of the atmosphere giving rise to the solar wind, thermal conductivity, and radiated power loss. Energy-balance models dealing primarily with one or another of these processes are identified, and it is shown that an overall balance of the total conducted and radiated fluxes in the transition region is possible. Channeling of the conducted heat flux along magnetic-field lines is considered together with the problem of pressure balance. Some current problems are briefly noted, including the nature of the mechanical waves (acoustic or MHD), the height at which damping takes place, the contribution of direct mechanical heating to the energy balance in the transition region, and the hydrostatic pressure at various levels in the atmosphere.
