It is shown that observers whose observation of particle modes is limited by a horizon see a ``hot'' thermal vacuum. This unifies and generalizes the results of Fulling, Gibbons, Hawking and Unruh. The close parallel with the thermo-field dynamics of Takahashi and Umezawa is delineated.
It is a pleasure to express my thanks to the Cambridge relativity group, in particular to S.W. Hawking and G.W. Gibbons, for their kind hospitality and for many illuminating discussions. I should also like to thank S. Fulling and M. Israel for helpful comments on the manuscript.
