A sudden strong X-ray outburst from Cir X-1 is reported which lasted for about three days in February 1976 and was detected with the rotation modulation collimator aboard Ariel V. The light curve shows that the transition to the high-intensity stage must have occurred between 0400 and 0512 (UT) on February 15 and that the source experienced a rapid decline in intensity following peak brightness. It is found that the photon number spectrum for the maximum X-ray intensity can be fitted by a thermal exponential spectrum with kT of 1.7 to 2.4 keV at a column density of 10 to the 22nd power atoms/sq cm. It is concluded that the present observations are consistent with an irregular high-intensity outburst every 220 to 250 days.
