A two-frequency (8 cm and 32 cm) dispersion interferometer on board the Mars 4-7 spacecrafts was used to measure integral electron concentrations in the ionosphere and the interplanetary plasma. Seventy seven different measurements were made, with interferometer signals transmitted to regions 10 to 390 million kilometers away from the spacecraft. Twelve cases showed anomalously large and intense variations of the electron concentration, apparently caused by large-scale inhomogeneities of the solar wind. Mars-7 measurements of the electron concentration of the near-solar plasma are discussed.
