A simple model is developed for the quasigeostrophic zonal atmospheric circulation of a rotating planet. The analysis is based on a formula for geostrophic wind and assumes the circulation to be induced by differences in heat budget between high and low latitudes. Problems of kinetic energy generation and the parameterization of baroclinic instability are considered, and the specific case of circulation in the Mars atmosphere is examined.
