Daily changes in tilt angles of the magnetic axes of active solar regions are examined and analyzed by means of magnetogram data collected between 1967 and 1990. The tilt angle is defined as the angle formed by a parallel of latitude and the line connecting the locations of the leading and following polarity magnetic fields. Average negative daily tilt angle changes are found in most regions with positive tilt angles, and average positive daily tilt angle changes are found for regions with negative tilt angles. Regions that rotate their tilt angles rapidly cannot be distinguished from regions that rotate slowly strictly on the basis of the age, magnetic flux, or the polarity separation of the region. However, the cycle phase shows that large daily tilt angles are clustered around the solar maximum. Polarity axis rotation rates are shown to be greater at higher latitudes. Rotation is faster by 1-2 degrees/day in regions showing large tilt angle rotation rates. It is suggested that the results are related to the subsurface connection characteristics of the magnetic flux tubes in the regions.
