Gamma-Ray Bursts, Fireballs

Scientific paper

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the brightest objects in the Universe. They are also the most relativistic objects known so far. GRB observations were recently revolutionized by the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX that discovered the delayed X-ray emission, "afterglow". Today, GRBs are widely believed to be caused by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a relativistically expanding fireball. I discuss the dynamics and some geometrical issues in the fireball model.
