Magnetohydrodynamics, Outflows
Scientific paper
For years the field of MHD outflows has been governed by a kind of negative paradigm that MHD acceleration is implausible. It is argued that this negative paradigm as well as the hoop-stress paradigm has originated in the radial (split-monopolar) field structure model. We instead establish a new positive paradigm that MHD acceleration is possible by showing that the fast magnetosonic surface be situated somewhere between the subasymptotic and asymptotic domains, and that working of the Lorentz force is ongoing in the whole of the latter domain as well as in the former. The ideal MHD process can thus produce sufficient acceleration of the Crab pulsar wind compatible with the Rees-Gunn model for the Crab nebula.
