Variation in the ratio of the auroral intensities of forbidden line N I 5198.5 A and 5200.7 A emissions was observed at Svalbard, Norway using a 1-m Ebert-Fastie spectrophotometer operating in a photon-counting mode. The ratio varied between 1.56 + or - 0.06 and 1.20 + or - 0.08. The variation may proceed from a difference in the quenching of N(2D3/2 0) and N(2D5/2 0) by O(3 P2,1, 0) resulting from the requirement of the conservation of total angular momentum of the N + O system. The observed variation in the forbidden line N I emission ratio with changes in the average energy of auroral electrons in the cusp region indicates a height effect.
