A dispersion equation for waves propagating in a three-layer medium (three kinds of fluids in a gravity field) is derived. The dispersion equation is solved in the long-wave approximation for a three-layer medium consisting of the solar wind, the magnetic barrier, and the magnetosphere. It is shown that if the density of the magnetospheric plasma is greater than the plasma density in the magnetic barrier, the interface of these two regions (the magnetopause) is unstable with respect to flute disturbances.
