Calculations have been carried out to evaluate the production rate of atomic oxygen in the mesosphere during auroral electron precipitation events involving electrons with energies in the hundreds of keV. Using current estimates of the electron flux and spectra, it is concluded that [`]relativistic electron precipitation' events serve to increase the oxygen concentration at 70 km in the pre-dawn hours but not to the extent that its magnitude becomes comparable with those during daylight hours.
