Isotopic analysis of recent carbonate sediments from the Coorong area of South Australia show dolomite enriched in O 18 and depleted in C 13 relative to calcite by at least two permil. This isotopic behavior suggests that the two minerals were precipitated under different conditions, and that the dolomite is not formed from calcite by solid-state ion exchange.
