Some geometrical features of shear-free congruences in (2 + 1)-dimensional general spacetimes are studied. The object is to analyse the condition of vanishing shear as a possible relativistic extension of the rigidity condition in non-relativistic kinematics. As an example, the congruence modelling of a shear-free rotating disc in (2 + 1) Minkowski spacetime is determined.
