The equation of state of collisionless isotropic radiation is investigated in the spatially flat Robertson-Walker universes with a specified expansion factor. The case of a scalar field which satisfies the nonconformally invariant wave equation is treated. It is found that in the geometrical-optics limit, the equation of state is: pressure equals 1/3 the energy density of one radiation fluid. However, the space-time curvature induces corrections to geometrical optics, leading to a pressure greater than 1/3 the energy density with pressure/density a monotonically decreasing function of cosmic time.
