In the last century the correlation between solar activity as expressed by the sunspot number, and geomagnetic activity as expressed by the aa-index in the 11-year solar cycle as well as in the secular solar cycle has been steadily decreasing, which is commonly attributed to the different evolution of the Sun's open and closed magnetic field. Here we show that the changing correlation between sunspot and geomagnetic activity is due to the changing tilt of the solar magnetic dipole relative to the rotation axis, and that this tilt has a secular cycle consistent with the secular cycle of the north-south solar activity asymmetry. This has important consequences not only for geomagnetic activity but also for the modulation of the galactic cosmic rays believed to be one of the candidate mediators between solar activity and climate.
