Introduction: A model for the universe with both acceleration and deceleration is given incorporating an initial acceleration, then a deceleration as has been observed by Schaefer in respect of gamma ray bursts, a second phase of acceleration that would explain the observations by Perlmutter et.al. on supernovae. Method: We write the field equations as Gμν= κTμν+Λgμν with Λ as a variable, and impose the condition that the entire right hand side of the equation is divergenceless. Then it is not the energy momentum of matter and radiation that is conserved, but the energy momentum of matter, radiation and the energy of the Λ field. Results: We try a solution in the form R = a + b[1] cos ωt + b[3]cos 3 ωt for the universe, which accelerates first then decelerates, accelerates again and decelerates for a second time, from A to H, and then repeats the cycle as shown in the figure. Discusiion: The introduction of a varying Λ and a new conservation law results in a model for the universe capable of explaining the recent observations. Perlmutter as well Schaefer.
