The paper summarizes some of the chief improvements in our knowledge of Jupiter and its surroundings which have been made possible by the Pioneer 10 and 11 data. The most significant new information concerns the shape and structure of the external magnetic field and of the magnetosphere, the density and energy of particles in the radiation belt, and the interaction of the planet with the satellite Io. Pioneer data on oblateness, gravitational coefficients, internal heat emission, and the structure of the magnetic field combined with advances in theoretical analysis of the equation of state of the hydrogen-helium system have greatly affected our understanding of the Jovian interior.
