Galactic cosmic rays are the primary source of ionization in the stratosphere at all times and are the primary source in the lower mesosphere at night and during solar eclipses. The ion-pair production rate is given as a simple function of latitude and height (using pressure as the variable). The solar cycle variation may be included by the use of a simple sinusoidal variation.
