Cool star outer atmospheres represent an important laboratory in which solar-like magnetic activity phenomena can be studied under a wide variety of conditions, allowing us to gain insight into the fundamental processes involved. The UV range is especially useful for such studies because it contains powerful diagnostics extending from warm (10,000 K) chromospheres out to hot (1--10~MK) coronae. Also very weak coronal winds from cool stars have been identified and characterized thanks to high resolution UV spectra. Here I give a review on UV spectroscopy main achievements for cool star chromospheres, transition regions, coronae and coronal winds. I also outline the requirements for future experiments able to allow progresses in this field.
