Recently Liu and Hayashi (2006) found that the fast halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in October-November 2003 initiated from areas with special configuration of magnetic field present: open flux or plasma sheet. They concluded that the configuration of the background magnetic field plays an additional role in shaping the propagation of the fast halo CMEs, and thus ensure a high speed when special configurations apply. In this paper, we extend our study to a large sample: including all halo CMEs detected by SOHO/LASCO and identified by Gopalswamy group, to explore more general relationship between halo CMEs' propagation and configuration of background magnetic field. We also place a discussion on our results here.
