The dip in magnetic field strength noted by the inbound Giotto trajectory in the Comet Halley ionosphere is explainable in terms of a diamagnetic effect of the plasma density increase in the pile-up region. As no such magnetic effect of the enhanced plasma density was observed near the ion pile-up region anticipated for the outbound leg of the trajectory, it is hypothesized that the ion pile-up in the inner cometary coma observed on the inbound leg could be an either spatially or temporally transient phenomenon, rather than a permanent, steady-state feature.
