A survey is conducted of the current understanding of the plasma environment of comets in view of spacecraft data from the three comets thus far visited by spacecraft, namely Giacobini-Zimmer, Halley, and Grigg-Skjellerup. The importance of picking up ions has been confirmed, and much work has been done on the wave-particle interactions, particle distributions, and wave properties that are the key features of the acceleration of the solar wind in a cometary environment.
