The extended neutral gas corona observed by Voyager on Saturn and Uranus suggests charge-exchange loss of energetic charged particles of the ring current. This could in turn generate energetic and dynamic effects in the planetary upper atmospheres through precipitation. An evaluation is conducted of the significance of such a process to the production of H Lyman-alpha, H-alpha, H-beta, and H2 band emissions from these planets; the importance of the mechanism is noted for the case of optically thin H Lyman-alpha emissions.
