Plausible planetary ion-acceleration processes in the plasma sheet of the Martian magnetotail are presently addressed through an analysis of both the kinetic and the hydrodynamic properties of distributions of heavy ions. The signatures of ion acceleration by (1) magnetic field line shear stress, (2) field-aligned and (3) cross-tail electric fields, and via direct interaction with the polar region magnetosheath plasma, are sought through various correlations of plasma sheet and solar wind parameters.
