The character of the Mars magnetosheath is presently explored on the basis of Phobos 2 plasma and magnetic field data, and it is found that the behavior of this region is strongly modified by the addition of a planetary ion population to the hydrogen magnetoplasma. It is also noted that the transition from the shocked solar wind to the magnetosphere generates new boundaries. The intense bi-ion magnetoacoustic waves filling the magnetosheath may evolve into multiple shock-like structures.
