With a view to the study of solar coronal helmet streamers, 3D resistive MHD simulations are conducted of magnetic reconnection in a multiple current magnetic sheet configuration. The simulations of the linear and nonlinear development of the tearing mode instability indicate that reconnection in complex coronal neighboring flux systems converts magnetic field energy into thermal energy and results in small-scale tonge outflows rather than coronal mass ejections on a larger scale.
