We report observations of low-frequency magnetic waves due to newborn interstellar pickup He+ ions. The excitation of low-frequency waves due to resonance with newborn pickup ions is a well-understood process involving cyclotron resonance between a ring-beam ion distribution and Alfven or fast-mode waves. A small number of published examples of waves due to interstellar pickup protons exist [Murphy et al., 1995] and the core of this effort has been to extend those observations to include a broader range of spacecraft and solar wind conditions. In our investigations of Ulysses and Voyager 2 data sets, we have located periods of simultaneous wave excitation due to both pickup protons and He+ near 4 AU. We argue these ions do not have a Jovian source. To our knowledge, this is the first report of wave excitation due to interstellar He+ pickup ions. Reference: Murphy et al., Space Sci.
