The large infrared telescope for Spacelab is designed for the study of planetary atmospheres, stars, interstellar molecular clouds, and galaxies. It has a Cassegrain configuration and the focal plane instruments are located in the volume behind the primary mirror. The end of the instrument chamber mates with the mounting flange of the Spacelab Instrument Pointing System gimbal assembly. One boresighted star tracker is mounted externally on the telescope structure, and two roll sensors are located on the conical shell of the focal plane instrument chamber. The performance characteristics and physical properties of the telescope are discussed, along with Spacelab accommodation and orbital and operational considerations.
