Megie et al. (1978) discussed the seasonal variations of sodium and potassium in the mesosphere and suggested that the large winter increase in sodium abundance observed at midlatitudes is due to increased vertical transport of terrestrial particles during winter. In support of this hypothesis they cited a lack of seasonal variation in the sodium abundance at low latitudes. It is the purpose of the present note to point out that contrary to the claim of Megie et al., a strong seasonal variation of sodium abundance is observed at 23 deg S.
