The theory of torsional hydromagnetic oscillations of the magnetosphere is usually cast in terms of orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. For a general magnetic field B with potential Omega it is shown that no coordinates exist in which a suitable solution may be found unless the Alfven velocity together with B and Omega satisfies certain functional relationships.
