The distribution of B sub y in the geomagnetic tail, associated with a net cross-tail magnetic flux, is investigated within the framework of two-dimensional but nonplanar field adiabatic time-independent equilibria. It is shown that the flux distribution is controlled by the pressure anisotropy of the plasma, B sub y being enhanced at the current sheet center relative to that in the lobes for the pressure tensor parallel to the field greater than the pressure tensor perpendicular to the field and vice versa for the parallel tensor less than the perpendicular tensor.
