A sweep frequency method of ionospheric absorption measurements is presented. In this, ionospheric absorption is deduced from the variation in the total signal level of a large number of unknown man-made transmissions. Absorption measurements taken for a long period at Athens (38 deg N, 23 deg 49 min E) are compared with simultaneous measurements obtained by other methods. An example of a solar X-ray flare burst which is easily detected by this method during an SID is presented.
