The effects of stars passing through the Oort Cloud of comets, which causes a fraction of the population to plunge inwards towards Jupiter, are analyzed. Jupiter perturbs the orbits in a stochastic way. Analysis of the long term effects shows that theory predicts significantly more shorter-period comets than are observed. A theory which attributes the evolution of cometary orbits to small but systematic nongravitational effects leads to the same discrepancy. The cometary fading explanation is also unsatisfactory.
