The absence of gravitationally bound systems with size 10 Mpc is used to show that the energy density V during inflation satisfies V1/4 < 2 × 10-3 MPl. In the cosmic string scenario of galaxy formation this bound becomes a strong one, which makes it difficult to give the strings enough energy per unit length.
