Various sensitivity limitations affecting low light level Michelson amplitude interferometry for directly measuring the diameters of resolvable stars or determining the separations and position angles of compact multiple star systems are reviewed, and the wavelength-dependent detection thresholds as expressed in limiting stellar visual magnitudes that can be so achieved are calculated. Results are presented for the case of observing resolved main sequence stars of spectral type G2V, the spectral classification of the sun. It is recommended that the instrument baselines be extended so that some desired resolution criteria are preserved. Individual and composite photocathode quantum efficiency curves are shown.
