It is presently hypothesized that, if the multiring basins of the lunar surface were created by the impacts of natural satellites of the moon at an early point in solar system history, then the orbits of those primeval satellites would have to have been stable for substantial periods in order to account for the age differences that have been established for these basins. The consideration of primeval satellite orbit stability undertaken yields constraints on satellite masses and initial orbits for both long and short term orbit stability; it is also suggested that dissipation caused by lunar tidal friction could substantially contribute to the stability of close orbits.
