Aspects of the Backus-Gilbert, Moore-Penrose, and singular value decomposition inversion techniques are considered, and a close connection is shown to exist between the generalized Moore-Penrose inverse and the solution obtained by singular value decomposition. Simple lunar models are used to investigate the degree of nonuniqueness in inverting the free oscillation data. An algorithm using the singular value decomposition inversion scheme is shown to be capable of handling both inconsistent and rank-deficient data within prescribed tolerances.
