Solar Microwave Bursts: Magnetic Fields

Scientific paper

An extraordinarily large type IV solar radio burst was observed with the fast sampling radio telescopes (1.42 GHz, 2.84 GHz, 4.00 GHz) of Yunnan Astronomical Observatory from 08h31m to 09h41m UT on December 16, 1988. In the last 70 minutes, five main peaks appeared. Both a long period oscillation of 12.5 minutes and a short one of 1.2 minutes were observed. Many fast fine structures were superimposed on the type IVμ bursts of two frequencies (1.42 GHz and 2.84 GHz). It is suggested that the periodic oscillations were produced by the MHD modulation of magnetic field strength in flux tubes.
