Calculations have been carried out to show the nighttime growth of atomic nitrogen at [small tilde]100 km with the incidence of auroral electrons. For typical densities of auroral ionization, judged from riometer observations of cosmic radio noise absorption, the nitrogen concentration rises rapidly to levels in excess of daytime conditions. However, atomic emissions from electron impact excitation with the enhanced nitrogen concentration do not compete with those due to recombination processes of ions (N2+) from the stable molecular nitrogen reservoir.
