The average annual and sunspot cycle variations in spread-F occurrence were determined using data obtained by mid-latitude ionosonde stations around the world. It was found that variations over the same time intervals in the neutral particle density of upper atmosphere are similar but inverse to those for mid-latitude spread-F. For individual northern and southern hemisphere stations of four different longitude zones around the world, the diurnal, annual, and sunspot cycle variations for mid- and low-latitude spread-F occurrence were determined separately. Similar associations with the neutral particle density distributions were found. It is hypothesized that the observed longitudinal differences in the annual variations of spread-F occurrence may give an indication of similar longitudinal variations in the neutral particle density.
