ABOUT 10 yr ago, it was suggested on the basis of theoretical1 and observational2 evidence that there is a high concentration of interplanetary dust near the Earth (generally called the geocentric dust cloud). Although more recent theoretical studies3-7 and zodiacal light observations7,8 indicate that the existence of such a cloud is unlikely, it has been revived9 to explain the observed Doppler shifts in the zodiacal light10.
