Barium and strontium vapor release experiments performed at altitudes above 150 km in the auroral region and in the polar cap are considered, giving attention to Stoffregen (1971, 1972), Meriwether et al. (1973), and Wescott et al. (1969). Results are also reported of releases made in late April, 1973, from the Kiruna range, and in mid May from the South Uist range (57 N, 7 W). It was found that during magnetically disturbed periods, auroral heating controls, on a global scale, the modification of the neutral wind system which is observed at magnetically quiet times.
