Methods are developed for the determination of parameters of the atmospheric planetary boundary layer, within the framework of similarity theory based on the external parameters — wind velocity at the upper boundary of the layer, its thickness, air temperature difference between the upper and the lower boundaries, roughness of the underlying surface, and buoyancy forces. The form of the resistance laws is discussed. Determination of the thickness of the stationary and horizontally homogeneous (Ekman) boundary layer is analyzed and generalizations of the latter are suggested for non-stationary and inhomogeneous boundary layers.
