Formaldehyde, alumina and two naturally occurring aluminosilicates,
kaolinite and illite, were refluxed with an aqueous solution of
formaldehyde. Formaldehyde was converted to monosaccharides. This
provides the basis for a model for the primordial origin of
monosaccharides.
