The author considers a simple model in which the coronal magnetic field B is assumed to be potential in the region between the solar surface Γ0 and an exterior "source-surface" Γ1 of arbitrary shape. He proves that the boundary value problem that determines B from the value Bl of its component on Γ0 along either l^ = ω^ (orthoradial direction) or l^ = x^ (fixed direction) has at most one solution. On the other hand, he shows that a solution can exist only if Bl satisfies some "solubility conditions".
