Recent advances in the techniques of auroral spectroscopy are discussed. Present knowledge of the spectrum is reviewed including a collection of semi-empirical band intensities for the observed band systems. Variations in the spectrum in different colour classes and types of aurora are reviewed together with an account of recent developments in the theories of the excitation mechanism of auroral emissions.
