The observed lifetimes of horizontal branch stars yield an upper bound of 3×10-50 cm2 for the process γ+4He-->4He+X0 involving some hypothetical boson X0. This result excludes a recent interpretation of the angular distribution of the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven and Kamioka signals of the supernova 1987A in terms of the coherent scattering process X0+16O-->16O+γ. .AE
