An evaluation of the potential offered by silicon drift chambers as
detectors for X-ray (1-10 keV) astronomy is presented. Detection
efficiency, energy resolution and spatial resolution are discussed.
Attention is given to the effect of self-triggering on the spatial
resolution. Two dimensional position readout techniques are outlined.
