The downward solar radiation at the Earth's surface is modified by
scattering and absorption processes in the atmosphere and the geometry
between the positions of the Sun and observer. These principles are
outlined in this paper with particular attention to the use of satellite
measurements for aerial inventories of available solar energy at ground.
