Data for observations of structured Pc 1 events over Siple Station, Antarctica are examined. In each case, the generation of 1 Hz hydromagnetic waves detected in the magnetosphere. The events occurred on May 29, 1978 and Aug. 4, 1977, and data are compared with an earlier sighting on Aug. 1, 1977. The waves were concluded to be generated by the ion cyclotron interaction between the L = 4 field lines and the 30-50 keV protons near the equator. Light pulses caused by the waves were attributed to the wave/particle interaction of energetic positive ions decreasing in pitch angle and colliding with the atmosphere, although it is noted that problems exist for this interpretation. Observations of more events, which are infrequent, are indicated.
